|Rubric for Written Assignments (10 Pts)|
|This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeDepth of analysis||3.5 to >3.15 pts Sophisticated Paper goes beyond the assignment to explore the implications of arguments or evidence in new contexts or in particularly thoughtful, insightful, and/or original ways. Paper shows a nuanced grasp of conflict resolution principles and the ability to apply these principles with facility. 3.15 to >2.8 pts Highly Competent Paper fully meets the parameters of the assignment but does not exceed them. (and/or…) Paper demonstrates a good grasp of conflict resolution principles but some awkwardness applying them. 2.8 to >2.45 pts Fairly Competent Paper does not address some aspects of the assignment. (and/or…) Paper demonstrates a somewhat shaky grasp of conflict resolution principles. 2.45 to >0 pts Not yet competent Paper does not address the assignment. Paper is inconsistent with conflict resolution principles (i.e., it makes or fails to challenge the systemic assumptions of the problem.)||3.5 pts|
|This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeGrasp of reading(s)||1.0 to >0.9 pts Sophisticated Paper represents the authors’ arguments, evidence and conclusions accurately, fairly and eloquently. Demonstrates a firm understanding of the implications of the author’s arguments. 0.9 to >0.8 pts Highly Competent Paper represents the author’s arguments, evidence and conclusions accurately. 0.8 to >0.7 pts Fairly Competent Paper represents the authors’ arguments, evidence and conclusions accurately though not sufficiently clearly. (and/or…) There are minor inaccuracies. 0.7 to >0 pts Not Yet Competent Paper misrepresents the authors’ arguments, evidence, and/or conclusions. There is a lack of discipline of thought.||1.0 pts|
|This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeArgument& Evidence||3.0 to >2.7 pts Sophisticated Evidence used to support the central point is rich, detailed and well chosen. Evidence sections employ appropriate illustrations and/or quotations. The connection between argument and evidence is clearly and compellingly articulated in all cases. Guides the reader smoothly and logically into the body of the paper convincingly refuted. 2.7 to >2.4 pts Highly Competent Evidence used to support the central point is well chosen, though not particularly rich or detailed. The connection between argument and evidence is clearly articulated. Thesis paragraph clearly identifies a demonstrable central argument. 2.4 to >2.1 pts Fairly Competent Connection between argument and evidence is not clearly articulated in all cases. (and/or…) (Where applicable) Consideration of opposing evidence is cursory or the evidence is not convincingly refuted. Paper paragraph identifies a central argument that is demonstrable, though not stated sufficiently clearly. 2.1 to >0 pts Not yet competent Evidence used does not clearly support the main argument. (and/or…) (Where applicable) Important opposing evidence is ignored, thereby weakening the central argument.||3.0 pts|
|This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeLogic& Organization||2.5 pts Sophisticated Organization of paper as a whole is logical and quickly apparent. Connections among paragraphs are clearly articulated. Transitions between paragraphs are smooth. Every paragraph makes one distinct and coherent point, expressed in a clear topic sentence; the parts of each paragraph connect logically and persuasively, and internal transitions are smooth. 2.25 pts Highly Competent Organization of paper as a whole is logical and apparent, but transitions between paragraphs are not consistently smooth. Every paragraph makes one distinct and coherent point and, for the most part, the parts of each paragraph connect logically and effectively. In all but a few cases, the paragraph’s point is expressed in a clear topic sentence. 2.0 pts Fairly Competent Organization of the paper as a whole can only be discerned with effort. (and/or…) Not all parts of the paper fit the organizational structure. (and/or…) Not all the parts of the paper are effectively integrated. In a number of paragraphs, there is not a distinct or coherent point. (and/or) Topic sentences are missing or unclear in a number of paragraphs. (and/or) In a number of paragraphs, the parts do not connect logically. 1.75 pts Not Yet Competent Organization of the paper as a whole is not logical or discernable.||2.5 pts|
