Final Paper titles for G130 Global Economy and Development – Fall 2018
For your final research paper you need to answer ONE of the three questions given below. Your paper
should have focus on this question and should not exceed 2,500 words – with 10% flexibility. The
expectation is that you will do extensive background reading using both material recommended in the
Syllabus and other Journal sources you come across from your own research. It is recommend that
you use a minimum of
6 sources, including at least two sources you found in your own research on
the topic chosen. For your background research use books and/or Journal articles only. Avoid using
highly unreliable Internet sources such as Wikipedia or other unattributed sources.
Choose ONE of the following:
1. Pick a country of your choice (preferably one from the Global South) and critically assess its
economic and human development record since the 1980s paying specific attention to its
chosen development strategies and its progress on economic development and inclusive
development.
[Guidance: You are expected to demonstrate knowledge of different development indicators to
assess country’s economic, social and human progress. Has there been inclusive development?
Then, an attempt has to be made to relate these outcomes to nature of development policies.
Have these policies been relatively successful or unsuccessful and why? The words
critically
assess
are important and you will be expected to consider both achievements as well as failures
before forming a judgement]
2.
Given that some critics of transnational corporations (through their FDI and GVCs) point to
the many negative impacts they can have on countries of the Global South do you think
governments of Global South countries should stop attracting transnational investments to
their countries?
[Guidance: This question is asking you to identify, explain and evaluate the actual or potential
costs
AND benefits associated with ways transnationals operate in countries of Global South.
To gain a high grade you will need to use examples and arguments which are supported with
relevant evidence (for example, taken from companies or countries) and then come to a
reasoned judgement on the latter part of the question]
3. The global trading system has been in a state of flux since the collapse of the Doha Round
of trade talks. President Trump’s aggressive protectionist policies have only added further
tensions to the multi-lateral trading system. Write a critical commentary on how you think
the global trading system is evolving and whether it is likely to emerge as a “fairer” system
which helps the global economy to thrive.
[Guidance: The first part of the question is a statement and you will need to unpick it. You will
explain your understanding of the structure of the global trading system and its different
components and then go on to briefly explain in what sense can the Doha Round be
considered a failure and why. The second part asks you to consider recent trends in global
trade relations and debates around trade and what they tell us about the evolving system.
The last part of the question asks you to make a judgement about whether the current system
or the way it may evolve in the next decade is likely to be “fair” to all countries who participate
in it. You will want to use example to support your judgement]
