The Perception of the Asians on the Foreign Cultural Elements
A culture is defined as the things as well as the ideas which give meaning to a group with social connection. As such, the members of the social group use the culture as the way of their identification. There are some characteristics of people which are indicators that the people belong to the same culture. Therefore, the culture is signified by the sacred values of a group in the society. Some elements of cultural values of a given people such as the Asians are in the music, literature, art, design, painting, philosophy, among others. Asia has different ethnic groups, and the globalization has led to changes in the traditional culture of the Asians. However, the Asians have embraced the adoption of the popular westernized culture in various ways. The adoption of the pop culture in Asia has been embraced by the youths, but it is criticized due to the resultant moral decay.
Background of the Asian Culture
Asian culture as any other culture is influenced by various factors. The influence made by the factors leads to the development of the culture. Such factors include the geography, tradition, the religion, government policies and cross-cultural interaction. Indonesia is one of the Asian regions with a distinct culture which is highly influenced by modernism. Notably, Indonesia is on the Southeastern side of Asia, and has an authoritarian governing the system. Additionally, the region has a big population of up to 250 million people. The political system of Indonesia is responsible for 33 provinces which make up the whole Indonesia (Adnana, 2013).
The geography of Indonesia is described as archipelago due to the more than 13000 islands in the country. Notably, the country is home to more than 500 ethnic ropes, and hence there is a great level of diversity. The diversity of the region was highly contributed by the inter-island trade which existed between the Indians and the Chinese before the colonization of the country by the Dutch and the arrival of the Europeans. Among all the nations in the world, the state is fourth in regards to high population and also is the most culturally diverse countries worldwide (Adnana, 2013).
The country has Islam as the dominant religion. However, the religion is highly integrated by other local religions from the different ethnic groups which exist in the country. The Islamic community represents the 90 % of the whole population of Indonesia. The remaining 10% comprises of the Buddhist, the Hindu as well as the Christian Community. There has been a social and political transition in Indonesia, particularly after the end of the authoritarian rule of President Soeharto. The country is faced with a great social problem of poverty which continually alleviates (Adnan, 2012).
On the Eastern side of Asia, is Japan. Japan as a population of one hundred and twenty-five million people and is hence among the top ten countries in the world with the highest populations. The country also as a great diversity with the 700000 of the whole population being the Koreans, the 170000 is the Chinese. More so, the indigenous Ainu people comprise of 20, 000 of the population, the 1.2 million being the Okinawans and the largest population of 3 million people are the Burakumin (Miller, 2009).
Unlike Indonesia, where the highest population comprise of the Muslims, the dominant region in Japan’s in Buddhism and Shinto. However, Buddhism in Japan is integrated with other religions which have been introduced locally by people from different ethnic groups. The culture of the Japanese is also alienated to the grammar of the Japanese language. The language has a resemblance to characters in the Chinese language and the Korean. The language was adopted in the 16th century due to the interaction between the Japanese, the Korean and the Chinese and hence the similarities in the language.
There have been changes which have occurred in Japan making a difference between modern Japan and the Traditional culture of Japan. The changes emerged in 1912 when the country intensified the industrialization and thereby initiating the modernity. However, the industrialization in Japan was disrupted when the country lost to the United States in the World War 2. The economic status of the country was highly affected by the losses, leaving the Japanese demoralized. However, during the post-war period, the country’s economy, with the financial assistance from the United States regained its roots. The non-Western country was able to reach the advanced capitalist state (Norris, 2010).
Chinese has literature which is 3000 years old. The literature has been developing immensely over time. Some of the forms of literature which are dominant in China include the Poetry, the fiction, prose, and the drama. China also has a generation of outstanding novelists, poets, and playwrights. The twentieth century led to the separation of the Chinese literature into classical and the vernacular forms. The classical literature was comprised of the upper-class men as well as the educated ones. The well-educated men could express themselves in prose, short stories, and poetry. Vernacular, on the other hand, comprises of the work of people in the Chinese community who are both folklorists and men of the letter. The two groups of individuals have a common characteristic whereby, they are identified through their exploration in the common forms of novels, lyrics, and the plays. The modern literature according to the Chinese culture dates from the twentieth century, while the contemporary literature dates from 1976. The canes in the Chinese culture are highly associated with the globalization and the continuous interaction of the Chinese with the Americans and other western communities (Phillips, 2016).
Chinese cinema is also a significant element of culture. There are two basic phases of the film industry in China. The first phase existed before the establishment of the PRC while the second phase of cinema in China existed after the PRC was founded. There are three distinct treads of the cinema language which is used by the Chinese. The three treads include the cinema of China, the cinema of Taiwan and the cinema of Hong Kong. The contemporary cinema elements in China specifically the films addressed both the rural and the urban working class. During the launch of the modern cinema in China, there was the introduction of the film studios which were built in Shanghai and Beijing. The modernization continued to row until the rise of the filmmakers of the fifth generation (Koivula, 2016).
Introduction of the Western Culture in Japan, China, and Indonesia
The western culture was introduced in Asia through globalization. Remarkably, globalization is a process through which the interaction between people takes place on a global dimension. The global interaction may involve the individuals or communities. The mass culture is significant in the contemporary society, and it is as a result of globalization.
Some of the elements which indicate the western popular culture in Asia include hybridization. Hybridization involves the mixture of different elements within one culture. The hybridization is indicated by the spread of the western culture among the Asians despite the Asian cultures. Another element of globalization and cultural mix among the Asians is the synchronization; this is whereby, the products of culture become unidirectional. For instance, in Indonesia, after the end of the authoritarian rules, there were numerous positive changes both socially and politically.
Examples of Western Culture integration in Asia
The youth in Asia has adopted the English language rather than their local and national languages. More so, the Asians and particularly the young generation have embraced the celebrations of the Halloween ceremonies. More so, the diet of the Asians has been compromised by the western dishes which are offered in different joints all over Asia. Some of the junk food available in Asia includes the KFC, McDonald and the Dunkin Donuts. The newly introduced foods in Asia have led to the disregard of the traditional foods. As such, the diet of the Asians is not as tasty and healthy as it used to be before the pop culture introduction. In addition to the diet, the soap operas being viewed by the Asians are mostly the American ones. Furthermore, Hong Kong has changed its music, and the integration of the Cantonese lyrics and the Western style of music are gaining popularity (Norris, 2010).
In Japan, the gap between the traditional and the modern culture is much distinct. Initially, the culture in Japan was characterized by tea ceremony, the kimono dress code, the flower arrangement, geisha, Ninja, calligraphy among other elements. The contemporary culture in Japan as however changed on a large scale. The examples of the elements of the modern culture in Japan includes; films, magazines, the video games, the magazines, the radio, fiction, changes to the new modes of fashion and popular music. More so, the modern culture in Japan is characterized by animations, comics as well as listening to the radio (Phillips, 2007).
The features of the pop culture in Japan include the long-running popularity. The performers and the characters in the films are much more approachable in Japan as compared to the traditional ones. Also, the cross-media promotion is highly experienced. For example, the modern society in Japan often watches the popular songs being played on the televisions. However, the culture in modern Japan is also highly linked to the traditional culture in Japan. The Japanese have dwelt on the English language included in their music (Demetriou, 2016).
The association of the Japanese with the Western community has led to the recognition of different social issues. For example, the human nature has degraded as a result of westernization. Characters are much flawed in the modern society than in the contemporary society. Aspects such as violence and racism are continually being experienced in Japan. Other issues such as unemployment, teenage-pregnancy, and juvenile delinquency are lost as a result of modernization. Therefore, the youths are highly affected both positively and negatively by the adoption of the modern popular western culture (Times, 2016).
Interaction between the Asians and the Australians
The interaction between the Asians and the Australians is significant to the Asian culture due to the perception based on the race, sex, social classes, and gender. Asia literacy is a widely used concept in the description of the integrated Asian culture. The Asia Literacy is whereby, mutual negotiation of people with different pasts, histories, and cultures. The mutual negotiation leads to the co-existence which is both comprehensible and satisfying. However, the mutual negotiation is carried out such that the elements which lead to diversity, including the history, culture and the different pasts continue creating the coherence and meaning in the lives of the people. For example, the interaction which exists between the Australians and the Indonesians has the difference concerning contexts. The difference, for instance, is evident in the literature which is shared between Australia and Indonesia. For example, in the last decade, there have been less than fifteen novels, which are written in Indonesian theme by the Australians (Miller, 2009).
In brief, the Asian countries, specifically, Indonesia, Japan, and China have had a great history of the culture. The people were initially rooted in various elements of culture such as cinema, music, language, foods among others. However, due to the effects of the globalization, the interaction between the Asians with the Australians and the Americans has contributed to many changes in the Asian culture. For example, the American junk foods are taking over the Asian food market. More so, most of the Asians, especially the young generation uses English as the language of expression and rarely use the national and the local language. The western culture through globalization is continually eroding the Asian culture, and the present generation is comfortable with the changes. However, the changes are both positive and negative.
