Assignment Brief

Introduction

This assignment will require you to choose a country/region of your choice and analyze its current standing in terms of past and current environmental practices and the impact on its local and global future sustainability. You are to identify the current practices and their effects on the environment, and their future impact if the‘business as usual model’ is maintained. You are then to propose, evaluate anddefend a ‘sustainability package’ that can be adopted to mitigate thissituation and steer the country/region into a sustainable future.

Your ‘sustainability package’ should include a combination of practices (social, education, etc.), science, policy and stewardship. You can identify more than one solution for a given problem but need to justify the solution(s) you feel have the best chance of achieving your goal. You may find that a combination of more than one solution is needed, which is fine as long as it is defended properly. Although the solution package has a local/regional focus you can supplement it by the ‘bigger picture’ impact of the global implication of this solution. You are expected to research and read relevant material from other sources, and to evaluate and strengthen the case of the package you are putting forward.

Deliverable and Submission

You will submit an interim report (10% of your final grade) (about 2000 words) and a final report (about 6000 words) (50% of your final grade) as per the assignment timeline shown below. This word count does not include any appendices or the list of references used in your reports.

The interim report should clearly identify the problems, causes and challenges that the country/region is facing. No detailed solutions are to be included in the interim report. The interim report should also include items 1,2,3 of the list below.

The final report will build on the interim report by proposing and defending the details of the ‘sustainability package’ that you think best addresses the one or more major problem(s). Expand on one of the items 4,5,6,7,8 listed below.

The main parts of the interim report are to be included in the final report, after being revised based on the feedback you will receive on your interim report. Thus the final report will be a complete and comprehensive report that can be used without having to refer back to the interim report.  The whole team shall make sure that the final report is in good shape to be submitted.

Proper referencing (Harvard system) is required. Wholesale copy and paste from other sources, even if referenced, is not acceptable and can be considered as plagiarism. The reports WILL BE checked using the ‘Turnitin’ software. If you have problems/doubts about referencing discuss them with coordinators of the ASU or with the module tutor.

Include in your report the following:

1. The economy of your selected country (Gross Domestic Product, Growth Rate, Major source of income, Poverty rate)  (team work)

2. Human development index, literacy rate, mortality rate, infant mortality rate, population growth. (Team work)

3. Sources of Water and Energy (desalination plants, power plants, etc) (team work)

Expand on ONE of the following:

4. Waste Disposal Practices

5. Environmental Footprint

6. Atmospheric pollution figures

7. Environment laws of the country

8. Urban planning, communities, zoning.

Proposed Solutions should be subjected to the following arguments

1- Resources need to make the proposed solution a reality

            a. Financial

b. Land

c. Labor

d. Technical skills

            e. Energy

f. Equipment

2- What is the impact during the life of the proposed solution?

3- Why is your proposed solution better than alternatives solutions including the status quo.

4- Success measurement ( how you are going to evaluate that your proposed solutions is successful)

5- Think of the Ws (who, how, why, when, where, etc), who is going to do your proposed solution and who is going to be impacted by it, how will it be implemented, when should it be implemented (there may be different phases to the implementation), what is the location of your proposed solution.
